About Soot Black |
A really dense matt black dye spray, really effective and very, very dark. Looks great when used for soot staining on tunnel openings and in coal yard. We use it in coal wagons and it looks like really black coal residue. When we show this spray at exhibitions, people comment on how much it looks like coal residue. We also use a light spray on our plastic houses and if smudges with a damp tissue, the residue sits in the mortar joints really well. Because its sooty black it's easy to make very black weathering very quickly, usually with one coat. Please take care when using on models, it's very intense and much darker than the other Modelmates sprays. Use sparingly - least water soluble.

Landscapes |
Looks great as soot staining on tunnel openings, and as coal black in coal yards. It's possibly too black to use on trees, shrubs and grass. Makes ballast look really soot stained. At out exhibitions many people buy Soot Black to use it on ballast in coal yards. Works well on railway tracks and sleepers, making them look really coal black. Wipe it off the top of the track using a damp tissue after it has dried.

Models |
A very black spray. We use it on brick and stonework on our plastic and moulded buildings to get a really black stain, but only around the base of the building. We spray a light coat, let it dry and then wipe it off with a lightly damp tissue to leave it trapped in the joints. Care needs to be taken if it to be used as soot staining around funnels on loco's, the spray is not that directional and is hard to apply in small areas. It will also stain more than any of the other sprays.

A Dye & Not A Paint |
The sprays are translucent dyes and will not cover/obscure in the same way as a paint. The colours will look different if applied to different things like absorbent tufted grass in a landscape, or perhaps to the non porous coloured plastic surface of a model. Test the sprays before use to ensure that the colour is right. Because the sprays are translucent, they will also look different if sprayed onto different coloured plastics because the colour of the plastic will most often still be visible through the spray. Colours will look different if applied to a matt surface or a glossy surface. |
